Field of Research

New sustainable processes towards biopolymers based on renewable resources are in focus of current developments in times of a global resource change. Especially oleochemicals from natural fats and oils are promising for the synthesis of biopolymers due to their characteristic structural properties. By means of homogeneous transition metal catalysis oleochemicals can be efficiently transferred to polymer pre-stages.

With regard to an ecological and economical application a downstream separation of product and catalyst is essential - on the one hand, to obtain the required product purity and on the other hand, to enable a recycling of the usually expensive precious metal catalysts. However, this separation is challenging and with established methods (e.g. distillation, extraction, nano-filtration) the desired separation efficiency is not achieved. Thus, in this work the potential of cooling crystallization for selective product separation is investigated and the suitability of this concept as a new catalyst recycling tool in homogeneous transition metal catalysis is verified.
