Course Content
Building on the "Fundamentals on Crystallization", the course "Melt Crystallization" repeats and deepens the thermodynamic and kinetic fundamentals of crystallization (including dealing with multi-dimensional phase diagrams, the consideration of crystal form development).
Furthermore, the knowledge is specialized to melt crystallization and the influences of rheology as well as heat and mass transfer are explained. The necessary experimental determination methods and corresponding parameters for the subsequent process design are taught, also in relation to the individual sub-process steps.
Subsequently, the various established melt crystallization processes and their equipment design will be presented. Finally, the principle of fractional crystallization will be discussed in connection with the possible design methods and the theoretical principles with industrial practice.
Aquired Competences
Students will be able to determine suitable conditions for technical problems in these separation processes, e.g. choice of solvent and crystallization process. In addition, they will be able to model the separation processes and, based on the simulation results, assess which product properties (purity, crystal shape, crystal size distribution, etc.) are likely to be achieved under given conditions.
The students are able to transfer the acquired knowledge to solve complex tasks.
