Project description
Innovation Area 1 addresses industrial defossilisation. Industrial defossilisation requires the development of new competitive processes that are both sustainable and represent a real economic alternative. As an example, in innovation area 1, ethylene and propylene glycol are to be produced from carbohydrate-rich residual material streams from the agricultural, food, and paper industries in the Rhineland mining area. These chemical building blocks are currently obtained from fossil resources and used for a wide range of applications, for example as monomers for polymer production. A comparison is made between biocatalysts and solid chemocatalysts for the conversion of complex waste streams. Novel energy-efficient separation processes and alternative reactor concepts are being tested for the efficient scaling of the technologies. Based on the research results, the newly developed methods and technologies will be analyzed and evaluated with regard to economic efficiency, environmental impact, further development and expected up-scaling.
