Field of Research: Continuous crystallization

Field of Research

In the context of maintaining consistent product quality such as a specific and narrow crystal size distribution (CSD), purity or morphology, the use of continuous crystallizers offers several advantages compared to batch crystallizers for the production of e.g. pharmaceutical products.

One of these continuous crystallizers is the slug flow crystallizer (SFC), characterized by the liquid segmentation through a gaseous phase and the maintenance of a narrow residence time distribution. This feature and the internal circulation within the liquid slugs without external devices ensure the achievement of increased product quality within very short process times.

The project focuses on the crystallization process in the apparatus, improvement in process efficiency and assurance of in-spec product crystals. Basic approach is the separation of nucleation and growth zone in order to enhance the control of crystallization phenomena.
