Dr.-Ing. Stephan Adelmann
Curriculum Vitae
Stephan Adelmann studied mechanical engineering with the majors process design and biomedical engineering at the Leibniz University of Hanover. He completed his degree in 2008 with his thesis on "Calculation of the energy conversion in a screw type motor based on a multiphase screwpump".
From October 2008 to December 2011 he was employed at the laboratory of plant and process design and his research as a Ph.D student focuses on centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC).
From November 2006 to April 2007 he completed an internship in Mobile, Alabama, USA for Degussa (today Evonik) in the field of integrated process development.
Field of Research
Centrifugal Partition Chromatography is mainly used for preparative scale purification of natural products. Separation is based on the different solubilities of the compounds in the two phases of an immiscible liquid mixture. Therefore one phase flows through the other phase which is kept stationary by the forces of centrifugation. Compared to other chromatographic separation processes a direct scale-up of CPC is possible and the absence of a solid phase avoids irreversible adsorption.
The aim of this work is the analysis and modeling of the hydrodynamics in a so called static centrifugal partition chromatograph. Thereto the dispersion and coalescence properties of various two phase systems are investigated by stroboscopic exposure of the two phase flow to describe the influence on the separation efficiency.
