Curriculum Vitae

Christoph Schwienheer studied biochemical engineering at the Technical University of Dortmund since 2005. He graduated in 2010 with a diploma thesis dealing with modeling and experimental research of hydrodynamics in a chamber of the hydrostatic centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC).

From 2009 til 2015 he worked as PhD student at the Laboratory of Plant and Process Design at the Technical University of Dortmund. His research was about centrifugal partition chromatography.

Field of Research

Centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) is a preparative method mainly used for purification of natural products.

The separation principle is based on different partitioning of substances between two immiscible liquid phases. One phase is kept stationary in chambers using a centrifugal field while the mobile phase is pumped through this stationary phase. As for example comparable to liquid chromatography a time resolute separation between the substances occurs.

Using aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) as solvent system it is possible to use the CPC in the downstream process of biotechnological products (e.g. proteins, antibodies). The special physical properties of ATPS offer a conservative application on the one hand, but special requirements for the usage in CPC on the other hand.

The aim of this project is to make the usage of ATPS in CPC possible. At first suitable operation conditions (e.g. CPC chambers geometry, volume flow, revolution) have to be explored. After this it is possible to clean biotechnological products using the modified CPC
