Field of Research: Continuous Centrifugal Extraction

Field of Research

The application of unstable phase systems (like aqueous two-phase systems) in conventional extraction processes is challenging due to poor phase separation and resulting long phase settling times. The development of the continuous centrifugal extraction (CCE), which is based on the technology of centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC), provides a benefit, as the use of centrifugal forces enhances phase separation and additionally supports phase mixing.

Both liquid phases are pumped continuously in counter-current direction through a chamber cascade inside a rotor. A third stream containing the sample to be separated can continuously be fed somewhere in the middle of the chamber cascade. This transfer from a batch process (CPC) to a continuous one (CCE) leads to a significant increase in overall productivity.
