Laboratory for crystallization

kristlabor2The laboratory for crystallization is a common laboratory of both laboratory of Thermodynamics and laboratory of Plant and Process Design. The main focus is the crystallization of solutions, whereby the laboratory of Plant and Process Design capitalizes on the initiation of nucleation as well as on the crystallization of multi solute systems.

Equipment

Automated lab reactor Labmax

Computer aided automated lab reactor for day-long operation; Measurement of process data together with ATR-FTIR, FBRM and turbidity probe

Workplaces of crystallization

6 stations with crystallizers between 50 ml and 4 l

Probes

  • ATR-FTIR-Probe
Real-time probe to measure in situ the concentration of multi solute systems with the aid of infrared spectroscopy
  • Lasentec FBRM-Probe
    FBRM (Focused Beamed Reflectance Measurement)
In process particle characterization by determination of the cord-length distribution of the particles
  • MTS ORM Probe
In process particle characterization by determination of the cord-length distribution of the particles
  • PVM-Probe
PVM (Particle Vision and Measurement) is an on-line video microscope, suitable for the generation of high resolution images during the crystallization process and offers the possibility of real-time particle analysis.

Furnace with rotating device
Furnace with a sample placement in the rotating device to suspend particles for solubility measurements.

Vacuum furnac
Drying of crystal samples and evaporation of solvents; especially for temperature-sensitive compounds

Power Ultrasound
Ultrasonic transducer with frequencies of 40 kHz; 204 kHz; 355,5 kHz; 610 kHz and 1046 kHz and continuously variable power output of at most 200 W for the initiation of nucleation

Gassing
Gassing devices for the initiation of nucleation

Single crystal flow cell
Flow cell to measure the crystal growth kinetic of a single crystal

Leica microscope
Digital microscope with camera and Heating/Cooling table for the investigation of phase seperations, nucleation and crystal growth.
Operating temperatures: -190°C to 600°C.

Stereo Loupe
Digital stereo loupe for particle charaterization

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)
Modulated differential scanning calorimeter (dynamic differential calorimetry) for studying thermodynamical properties of crystals and solutions.
Operating temperatures: -90°C to 550°C

Analytics
Further methods for analysis (e.g., HPLC, XRPD, SEM) are available in the other laboratories or in the to the faculty related institutes (e.g. ZEMM).
Weitere Methoden zur Analyse (z.B. Chromatographie, XRPD, REM) stehen in anderen Laboren oder in fakultätsinternen Instituten zur Verfügung (ZEMM).
